Eric Finney
Eric Finney was born in Stafford in 1929. He started work as a bank clerk, but after doing National Service he entered the teaching profession. He was a junior school headmaster for many years, in Staffordshire and then for more than twenty years in Ludlow in Shropshire. Pupils still remember him for his reading and writing sessions, in which he encouraged a creative use of language. He was fond of using puzzles, poems, acrostics and stories to get kids to read and to write themselves. He retired from teaching a little disillusioned with all the bureaucracy his job had begun to involve, and devoted his retirement to producing a large number of poems, always designed to make reading enjoyable for children and often using ‘school’ as a setting. He died in 2014.
